33 Acts of Kindness

>> Monday, December 20, 2010

Project 33 is coming into it's third year of service and in honor of this milestone, we are challenging all of our loyal volunteers and new friends to complete 33 acts of kindness on your own this year. This might include a day serving food to the homeless, taking a shelter animal for a walk, or just buying coffee for the person in line behind you. The best part, you don't even have to be in Reno to participate in this event. You can give back any where you are.

You will find a discussion post on the Project 33 Group Page. This discussion post will be a place for you to record your acts of kindness, keeping track of how many you do and also sharing ideas so we can all join in with new things we may not have thought of before. In addition to logging your hours here, post on your facebook page and/or the Project 33 Group page what you did and how others can do it too.

You are welcomed to wear your Project 33 shirt, if you have them, to these individual events and represent our amazing group, encouraging others to join in.

Lets make 2011 about planting the seed of giving in more people through our own individual good deeds.

Change Our World, Explore Our World

Project 33 and Cadets is growing by leaps and bounds!  It is so exciting to see how many people there are who want to make a difference in the lives of others! And sharing it with our kids makes it even better!  In order to make Cadets more flexible, we've decided to make some changes in order to allow more families into the fold!

We are doing away with monthly meetings and instead will be creating "Change Our World" (or C.O.W.)charitable events and outings.  Each month a family will be in charge of arranging these events or outings, which can be anything from visiting a shelter to putting together care packages for the troops.  The Greene family has arrange our first outing: a trip to the Reno Ronald McDonald house where our Cadet families will take baked goods for the residents and get a tour of the facilities.

We will still be doing monthly themed outings in order to expose our Cadets to the world and all the fascinating things in it.  These are our "Explore Our World" (or E.O.W.) outings.  We will visit museums, various religious organizations, find out about different branches of science, genres of art, and so much more!  There will be a monthly newsletter to go with our theme where the Cadets can go to different websites to play games or print out coloring pages based on our theme!

We are very excited about these change and we hope that they will help Project 33 and Cadets reach more people who want to make a difference for others and our world!

Share Your Christmas Food Drive

>> Monday, December 13, 2010

Project 33 was on hand last Friday to help out with the "Share Your Christmas Food Drive" at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.  It was especially exciting because Kasey and Project 33 were interviewed for the event on KTVN Channel 2 news by Kristen Remington!

Here are a couple of pics of the group sorting food at the end of the drive.

All in all, the food drive collected more than 178,000 pounds of food for Northern Nevada families!

Caroling at The Seasons

>> Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Last year, when a lot of us were a Girl Scouts Daisy troop, we sang Christmas carols for the residents of The Seasons Assisted Living home here in Reno.  It was by far our favorite outing of the year, so when we started Cadets, we knew that we had to include this in our holiday charity events.  And the experience this year was just as wonderful as the first!

There is a beautiful living room/foyer when you first come into The Seasons.  Here we are waiting to go carol:

The amazing songbooks Mr. Kasey put together for us!

Ms. Val keeping the Cadets occupied with stories!

Singing carol to the happy residents.  Thanks Mr. Kasey for playing guitar for us!

The best part was after caroling, when the Cadets went around and met with the residents and handed out our blankets.  You could tell they were really happy to have children there to visit them!

We will be back at The Seasons next year to carry on our favorite holiday tradition!

1st Annual Giving and Grub Get-Together

>> Sunday, December 5, 2010

We had our first Cadets Christmas potluck last night at the Kersch house.  Because we want to focus on teaching the Cadets charity (especially during the holiday season), we decided to make our party about giving back instead of exchanging gifts.  We decided to make fleece tie blankets to hand out to the residents in the memory ward at The Seasons assisted living home when we head over there Monday to sing carols.   Every family really stepped up to the plate and brought enough fleece to make 14 blankets, one for every resident in the memory ward!

The dads even helped out!

Kasey took the kids aside to teach them the carols we'll be singing Monday!

We are all really looking forward to caroling at The Seasons on Monday!  Those of us who were Daisies last year agree that it was our favorite outing of the year, and I know it will be a wonderful experience this year as well!

Thanks again to the Kersch family for hosting The Giving and Grub Get-Together!

Project 33 Awarded Certificate of Appreciation!

>> Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Project 33 was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation yesterday by the Governor of Nevada!  It was in honor of the work we do for our community.  We were invited to the Nevada Capitol Building to receive our award and to take a private tour!  We were especially honored to receive our award in the Governor's office itself!

Thanks again to all the Project 33 volunteers who made this award possible, and especially to DeeDee for planting the seed that got it all started!

For more pictures of our tour, head over to the Cadet blog here!

A Visit to the Nevada State Capitol!

Yesterday Project 33 was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Governor of Nevada in recognition of the work we do for the community!  The Governor's office invited us to come to the Capitol building to receive the award and get a private tour.

Here Ms. DeeDee talks to the Cadets on the steps of the Capitol Building:

Our tour guide, Ronald Roberts, was so nice and kept the children's attention the whole time.  First he led us into the main hall of the Capitol Building.

We were honored to go into rooms that are not usually opened to the public, the most exciting one being the Governor's office itself!

It's a tradition to put a penny in the Lincoln statue when you are in the Governor's office!

An insect paperweight in the Governor's office!

It was in the Governor's office that Project 33 was presented with the Certificate of Appreciation!

Then we continued our tour of the Capitol building.  A lot of the Capitol building is no longer used, serving instead as a museum for the public to tour where they used to house the different branches of State government.  Those are now in bigger buildings next door to the Capitol building, that we later got to see as well!

Ryan got to demonstrate how they used to send messages via telegraph!

They also had free books on the Political History of Nevada:

Our County flag!

The old Supreme Court:

We were invited into the Lieutenant Governor's office!  We were so lucky as it's not normally on tour!

In the Secretary of State's office, the Cadets got a kick out of a little trick Mr. Roberts played!  He asked each of them to look behind an old safe door and not say what they'd seen until everyone had had a chance!

And this is what we saw!

We headed outside to tour more buildings.  On our way we saw this statue of a minor.

Here is the current Nevada Supreme Court.  A bit bigger than the one room they used to use!

Our last stop was the current Legislature building! Our Cadets were so amazing and patient during the entire tour, and we were so proud of them for showing so much respect.

After our tour we headed to a park for a picnic.  Much to our surprise, Alyssa and Paige's dad, Josh,  surprised us with a delivery of ice cream from Model Dairy!!  Thanks Josh!

Congratulations to Project 33 for your Certificate of Appreciation!  Thank you for giving our children a chance to share in your award with our unforgettable tour of the Nevada State Capitol!
