Then on Friday 11/11/11, the Cadets and Project 33 loaded up behind Mr. Kasey's truck and paraded through downtown Reno to celebrate the great sacrifices that the men and women in uniform from the present, the pas,t and the future, have made for our freedom. Thank you to all who serve.

Cadets: Dragons of the North: The World of Viking Longships

>> Tuesday, October 11, 2011

The Cadets were honored with a special talk just for them by a real archaeologist!  Dr. John Hale from the University of Louisville came and gave the kids a talk about Vikings, their ships, and the role archaeologists play in finding out the history of these fascinating people.  Our thanks to Dr. Hale and also to Dr. Carola Naumer, who got this all arranged for us!

Homeless Awareness and Prevention Day 2011

>> Sunday, September 18, 2011

Project 33 was on hand at this year's "Homeless Awareness and Prevention Day", giving away children's clothing and shoes from our Kid's Clothing Closet.  "Homeless Awareness and Prevention Day" is put on each year by Faces of Grace Outreach Ministries at Paradise Park in Sparks.  This event reaches out to the homeless and the poor in our communities by bringing together community assistance programs, businesses, churches, and the community at large in an effort to educate those who are homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless about the resources that are available to them.

We set up some of our clothing on racks and some were laid out in bins.   Those who needed clothing for their children were able to pick out whatever they wanted. A free Rummage Sale!  We also had a huge selection of children's books to give out.

Some of our volunteers setting up before the event:

The event is in full swing!

Children loved the Kids Zone area, complete with face painting, bouncy houses, and other fun activities.

Darcy towards the end of the day, showing how empty our racks were getting!

Thank you so much to all our volunteers for your hard work and commitment.  And thanks to "Just Between Friends" for the huge clothing donation you gave us at your last event!  It went to those who needed it the most!

End of Year BBQ and Stargazing

>> Saturday, June 11, 2011

Our first Cadet year was a success!  We started the year in August, our first event being a scavenger hunt at Rancho San Rafael.  We did a lot of other fun outings throughout the year:  Veteran's Day Parade, singing carols at The Seasons, sugar skulls at the Museum of Art, touring the State Capital and receiving an award, and more!  We all look forward to the next year, when we hope to kick it off with a family camp only an hour away (if you are interested attending with us, please check out info here, we would love for you to join us!).

To end our year, we had a BBQ at my house, followed by stargazing at a local park.  Everyone really helped chip in for our BBQ, and the kids had a lot of fun on the new trampoline!

Then we headed over to the park.  Jim Fahey from the Astronomical Society of Nevada was very kind to come out for us and bring his awesome telescope!  A huge thanks to Jim for doing this! We got to see Saturn!  That was so cool!  And the craters on the moon were so awesome, too!  The kids also loved getting to be out late at the park!

Thanks to all the families who helped make our first year a success, always willing to lend a hand and do what needed to be done.  Also, a fond farewell to the Greene Family, who are moving away.  We will miss you so much!

Think Kindness

>> Wednesday, April 27, 2011

We've recently discovered a free community room at the local Raley's that we can use for talks and meetings!  So it was the perfect place to have Brian from Think Kindness give a talk to our Cadets about doing acts of kindness and charity.

Think Kindness is an "organization that aims to inspire thousands from coast to coast to change the world through seemingly simple random acts of kindness." Brian told the Cadets all about how he worked at an orphanage in Africa and how a lot of the children there don't even have a pair of shoes to walk to school in.  It really inspired him to want to help out. That's why Think Kindness has partnered with Soles4Souls to collect gently-used shoes to send to kids who need them around the world. Project 33 has recently donated a lot of shoes to this amazing program.

This Saturday, Think Kindness is holding their first annual BE THE CHANGE - Barefoot Walk-A-Thon around the Sparks Marina. The goal is to gather hundreds of individuals to 'Take The Walk' barefoot for 2 miles.  Project 33 and the Cadets are going to be there!  If you are interested, please visit their website for more info!

Thanks Brian for giving some kindness inspiration to our Cadets and their parents!

Easter Egg Hunt

>> Thursday, April 7, 2011

The Seasons is an assisted living home that the Cadets love to pay visits to!  Around Christmas time we head over to sing carols and bring goodies to the residents.  Last Christmas their activities director, Pam, mentioned to us that they would love to have us come for an Easter Egg hunt in April.  Of course we were thrilled with the idea, and so yesterday we headed on over for a visit and a hunt!

The residents themselves dyed the eggs, which were hidden in their little courtyard.  The residents sat on the porch as the Cadets looked for eggs:

After the hunt we were invited to come into the activity room where they generously made us Root Beer Floats!!  We also had a chance to check out the eggs we'd found!

The best part of visiting The Seasons is getting to interact with the residents!

Thank you Pam and the residents of The Seasons for a really wonderful afternoon!  We will see you next Christmas!
